This position is located with the Division of Clinical Services,
Dental Services Branch at Northern Navajo Medical Center in
Shiprock, New Mexico. The primary purpose of this positions to serve
as a clinical specialist in Endodontics to provide dental services
to the designated population in accordance with Indian Health

- Provides diagnostic services, through the use of history,
radiographs, examination, diagnostic models, and other
appropriate tests. Provides complex endodontic restoration of
teeth having suffered severe and rampant caries, periodontal
disease, and trauma to the oral cavity and supporting
- Provides emergency services, including the treatment of trauma,
pain and infection of the oral cavity. Obtains services in other
areas as appropriate for cases requiring a team approach, but
acts independently for complex cases involving his/her area of
- Provides technical guidance to dentists in the development and
operation of direct and contract endodontic programs
- Provides Technical Assistance and consultation in Endodontic
care to the Chief of Dental and other service units.
- Participates in the development and implementation of continuing
education courses for the Indian Health Services dental program.

Education: Applicants must have a Doctor of Dental Medicine
(DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from a school
approved by the American Dental Association (ADA) or the Commission
on Dental Accreditation (CODA) or an accrediting body recognized by
the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was
obtained. You must submit a copy of your transcripts (unofficial
transcripts are acceptable).
Licensure: Applicants must have passed the National Board Dental
Examinations (NBDE) which are developed and administered by the
Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE) and possess
a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a
State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or
a territory of the United States.
Medical Requirements: Applicants must be able to distinguish
shades of color.
In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the
Minimum Qualifications stated below-
GS-13: Applicants must complete a 3-year residency program in
dentistry, oral health, craniofacial sciences, or a related medical
science; -or- equivalent experience, equivalent to at least the
GS-12 grade level, and/or training.
Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized
experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in
the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector
performing the following type of work and/or tasks: comprehensive
dental treatment to children under age 18, filling cavities;
straightening, extracting, and repairing teeth; treating gum
diseases; performing corrective surgery; making measurements/models
for dentures to replace missing teeth, In-depth knowledge and
understanding of Endodontics, prosthodontic, operative and/or
preventative orthodontic services, perform simple, compound, or
complex restorations, administer local anesthesia and/or nitrous
oxide; determine types of services required, develop treatment
plans, inform patient about preventative dental care.
