This position is responsible for supervision, managing, directing,
coordinating, leadership and evaluating the provision of nursing
care provided on Medical/Surgical Unit/3West. The position reports
to Supervisory Nurse/Assistant Chief Nurse Executive-Inpatient. This
position is located at Indian Health Service (IHS), Navajo Area
Indian Health Service (NAIHS), Gallup Indian Medical Center (GIMC),
Division of Nursing Services, Medical/Surgical Unit/3West, Gallup,
NM.

  1. Responsibilities

- Functions as the Supervisory Nurse with 24-hours responsibility
for nursing services and nursing care on Medical/Surgical
Unit/3West.
- Plans the work for the unit, adjusting work schedules as needed
to meet the staffing and patient care needs.
- Implements personnel management procedures, training and career
development plans, grievance procedures, safety practices as
well as specific orientation and training of each employees.
- Recommends, initiate various personnel actions, performance
awards, and disciplinary actions for employee at level of
authority and works collaboratively with other Nursing leaders
to meet Division of Nursing, hospital and Federal initiatives
and goals.
- Performs the full range of patient care duties.
- Closely observes patients for conditions that may require
emergency measures; recognizes, identifies, and interprets
serious clinical situations, initiates and provides appropriate
immediate/emergency measures.
- Sets up, operates and monitors specialized equipment.
- Participates with the hospital performance improvement
coordinator to assure compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC)
standards and other applicable accreditation standards.
- Applies and implements EEO program and guidelines.

A one-year supervisory/managerial probationary period may be
required upon selection/placement.

Measles and Rubella immunization required for selectees born
after 1957. Seasonal Influenza immunization is required for civilian
health care facility staff working in Indian Health Service health
care facilities.

The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain an
active, unrestricted Nursing license from any State (U.S.). If they
are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will
be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from
Federal service.

Subject to rotating shifts: days, evenings, nights, weekends, and/or
holidays to provide continuity of patient care and rotation of
services as needed.

  1. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient
experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific
position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer
work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps,
AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional;
philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will
receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer
and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and
responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours
per week.

For positions requiring positive education requirements, or if you
are using education to meet all or part of the qualification
requirements, you MUST submit a copy of your transcripts or an
itemized list of college courses which includes equivalent
information from the transcript (course title, semester/quarter
hours, and grade/degree earned) in your resume.

BASIC REQUIREMENT:
Education: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor’s degree,
associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing
educational program is required. This education must have been
accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education,
Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs,
Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting
body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the
degree was obtained.
Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the
Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for
individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.
Licensure: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must
have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition,
they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license
or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District
of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the
United States.
Experience: The work experience must have equipped the applicant
with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully
perform the duties of the position. At the GS-09 and above grade
level, many positions may required experience in a specialty area of
nursing.
Basic Requirements for the GS-12 (or equivalent) Grade Level: In
addition to the mandatory license and education described above
under Basic Requirements applicants must have at least one or more
full years of professional nursing experience that is equivalent to
the next lower grade level (G
