Verra Mobility is seeking to hire a Deputy General Counsel to serve as the most senior business lawyer advising our global Commercial Services business unit. This position is responsible for providing legal advice related to contracts, intellectual property, regulatory compliance, and other legal matters related to the operations and strategic business objectives of the BU. The position reports to the General Counsel, with a strong dotted-line relationship with the EVP, Commercial Services, and directly supervises a Senior Counsel. Additionally, the position collaborates with other lawyers and professionals in the law department to support litigation/investigations, employment matters, SEC matters, government relations, and compliance activities.
The Commercial Services Business Unit creates breakthrough, customer-centric solutions that unburden our partners from complex, overwhelming challenges. Throughout the United States and in Europe, we provide automated, smart mobility services such as toll and violation management and electronic title and registration for fleet management companies, rental car operators, vehicle OEMs, car dealerships, financial institutions, as well as International Registration Plan (IRP) for the over-the-road trucking industry.
Through connectivity with nearly 60 individual toll authorities and more than 400 issuing authorities, we provide our partners with automated tolling solutions, violation management, title and registration solutions that protect more than 5 million vehicles owned by every major rental car company and nearly 600 corporate and service fleets.
+ The key responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited, preparing, reviewing and negotiating contracts, and providing strategic legal advice, relating to tolling and violation management services in the US and Europe, including those with large Rental Car Companies, Fleet Management Companies, and tolling authorities, and for title and registration services in the US
+ Serving as a true thought partner to the business, advising on international growth strategy as it relates to regulatory issues, corporate structure, contract management, and product design
+ Working with outside counsel and internal subject matter experts in the management of the Business Unit’s intellectual property portfolio, domestic and international growth strategy, real estate transactions, and strategic partnerships
+ Keeping informed of industry-specific regulations and ensuring that appropriate risk management strategies are developed, communicated, and followed
+ Analyzing legal and business risk and proposing creative, business-oriented solutions
+ Providing corporate governance support for European subsidiaries and supporting M&A transactions
+ Developing and/or assisting in the development of legal-related budget recommendations for the organization
+ Ability to work productively and professionally with legal counsel representing the company’s customers, prospective customers, vendors and other business partners to advance the Company’s objectives while building and maintaining important relationships
+ Managing at least one other professional in the Legal Department
+ Must be a member in good standing of one state bar and have 9+ years of experience in commercial contracting (in-house experience preferred)
+ Strong legal knowledge in the fields of sales, services, marketing, and privacy
+ Experience with European commercial contracting, M&A and/or regulatory matters (particularly PSD2, GDPR and VAT compliance) strongly preferred
+ The ability to successfully navigate organizational transformations, and be comfortable with ambiguity, risk, and uncertainty
+ Curiosity coupled with a high degree of integrity and forethought in his/her approach to making decisions
+ Strong presentation and negotiation skills and solid business instinct and judgment
+ Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills
+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex legal issues in a simple, understandable manner with colleagues of varying legal knowledge across the company
+ Strong collaborative skills, able to build partnerships and alliances internally and with external partners at all levels of the organization
+ Capability to deal with external parties (regulators, external counsel, clients)
+ Must be able to develop a plan and aggressively pursue a long-term goal, and effectively manage multiple projects with competing deadlines
+ Foreign language proficiency (French, Spanish and/or Italian) a plus
