Job Title:Tax Planning, Research, and Controversy Manager

What you'll do:The Tax Manager - Planning, Research and Controversy will report to the Senior Tax Director and possess the skills necessary to provide tax support on all business-related tax matters. This position will primarily partner with other business leaders to research and explain the tax risks of proposed new business initiatives, structure changes and other transactions along with manage the implementation of processes and procedures to cover the tax aspects of approved changes. This role will also investigate the tax effects of proposed GAAP/Tax treatment changes, perform tax analytics, assist with tax controversy, and occasionally help with day-to-day tax activities. We are seeking a candidate with a well-rounded tax knowledge base that can work independently, add value through tax optimization and align tax initiatives with the overall Company's. The Tax Manager will be a key member of the financial management team and will be based at Company headquarters located in downtown Phoenix, AZ.

Responsibilities
Proactively work with the tax department and other senior management regarding all business-related tax matters affecting the Company, including implications and recommendations
Establish effective working relationships for the tax organization across Company functions and business units
Collaborate with the other tax department members and external functions to ensure tax impacts of transactions are properly recorded and maintained once initiated
Research and examine the tax effects of potential GAAP/Tax treatment changes
Perform tax analytics which will include forecasting and modelling as needed by the business
Assist with tax research in response to requests and tax questions from business areas and Finance, including sales and use tax, property tax, fees, assessments, 1099s, withholding, federal income tax, state income tax, etc.
Contribute to the tax aspects of acquisitions, divestitures, mergers and capital transactions by identifying risks and opportunities
Assist with audits, examinations and inquiries by various taxing authorities and jurisdictions, including required internal and external coordination
Occasionally assist with day-to-day tax department activities and projects
Actively participate in the building of a professional, proactive, responsive, technically strong tax organization
Qualifications
7+ years of relevant tax accounting experience with a major accounting firm or corresponding in-house experience with a publicly traded company (bank or bank holding company experience is a plus)
Master's degree in Tax, Accounting, Business Administration, or equivalent education and experience (current CPA is a plus)
Strong working knowledge of the following: U.S. federal, state and local taxes; accounting for income taxes; federal, state and local tax audits; M&A transactions; strategy and planning; controls and processes; systems (including automation)
Demonstrated understanding of business implications of key actions and decisions as they relate to tax corporate structure
Excellent written, oral and presentation skills and the ability to clearly communicate complex tax issues to non-tax audiences
Excellent project management skills and experience managing multiple projects with competing priorities
Strong, demonstrated technical competency to achieve business objectives
Tax research software (Bloomberg BNA) competence
Hands-on and resourceful with the ability to independently investigate accounts and transactions to ensure proper treatment
Self-reliant, possesses professional skepticism, uses good common sense, takes initiative, and is results-oriented
Organized with the ability to set achievable objectives/timelines and hold people accountable
Strong interpersonal and communication skills with both internal and external constituents at all levels
Ability to create and execute solutions to business problems
A superior work ethic and dedication to the highest work quality and job excellence
Flexible and able to quickly and effectively manage priorities and direction
