Job Description

Essential Functions

(Illustrative Only) 
 

  • Interprets in consecutive and simultaneous modes English/Spanish and Spanish/English in hearings and proceedings for Superior and Justice Court, and other work-related situations as necessary.
  • Conducts sight translations of court documents.
  • Translates court forms, plea agreements and other court documents as order by the Court from Spanish to English and English to Spanish.
  • Translates and interprets other materials as directed for court divisions and departments.
  • May assist in the training of on-call and new staff interpreters.
  • Assists in coverage of the Self-Help Center. 
  • Performs other duties as required.
Preference may be given to candidates qualified by recognized interpreting and translation examinations such as the Federal Court Interpreter Certification Examination, and the National Center for Interpretation Testing.

WORK HOURS:   Position has varying hours and workdays, which includes weekends and holidays. Will be required to travel to various court locations and agencies within Cochise County.
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
Typically performs duties in an office environment and may lift materials and/or equipment 25Lbs. or less. Must have the ability to sit for long periods of time, listen to and comprehend multiple voice dialogues and the meaning of words, observe clearly and recall visual details. 
 

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Considerable knowledge of:

  • English and Spanish languages and their idiomatic usage as well as legal and slang terminology. 
  • All three modes of interpretation: simultaneous, consecutive and sight translation. 
  • Interpreter’s code of ethics and protocol, courtroom procedures, legal processes, and methods of courtroom interpreting.
  • Court Proceedings, procedures, and rules. 
  • Business English and Spanish spelling, punctuation, and grammar. 
Working skill in:
  • Operating office equipment.
  • Operating word processing system.
  • Operating interpreter audio equipment. 
Ability to:
  • Render precise simultaneous and consecutive English to Spanish and Spanish to English interpretations.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public.
  • Follow written and verbal instruction. 
  • Communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to research, learn and translate new terminology.
  • Ability to transcribe and translate Spanish and English and manipulate both languages in their formal and informal registers.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with judges, attorneys, employees, other agencies and the public.
  • Ability to work individually or as a team interpreter with both staff and daily contract interpreters.
