Job Description

An Intellectual Property (IP) Specialist protects an organization's innovations by managing patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secret portfolios. They handle filing applications with bodies like the USPTO, conduct searches, monitor for infringement, and manage docketing systems. This role requires legal compliance knowledge and close collaboration with R&D, legal counsel, and engineers.
Key Responsibilities
- Portfolio Management: Oversee and maintain IP assets, ensuring accurate records and tracking deadlines for renewals and filings.
- Application Filings: Prepare and file patent, trademark, and copyright applications with relevant IP offices.
- Legal Support: Assist attorneys in responding to office actions, infringement cases, and intellectual property litigation.
- Compliance & Strategy: Develop strategies to safeguard innovations and ensure compliance with U.S. and international IP laws.
- Research & Analysis: Conduct patentability and freedom-to-operate searches.
- Collaboration: Work with engineering, R&D, and marketing teams to identify new intellectual property.
- Documentation: Manage invention disclosures, patent marking, and IP-related documentation.
Qualifications
- Experience: Generally requires 1–5+ years of experience in IP administration, legal docketing, or paralegal work.
- Education: A Bachelor's degree is typically required; specialized fields (e.g., engineering, software, biology) are often preferred.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency with IP management software and docketing systems.
- Knowledge: Deep understanding of intellectual property laws, procedures, and trademark/patent documentation.
Required Skills
- Extremely high attention to detail for tracking, reporting, and managing legal filings.
- Strong organization and multitasking abilities to manage a high volume of cases.
- Excellent communication skills for collaborating with external counsel and internal teams.
