Pinto Valley is an open-pit copper mine located at the west end of the historic Globe-Miami mining district of central Arizona, approximately 80 miles east of Phoenix. Pinto Valley has been in operation since 1972 and has produced more than four billion pounds of copper. Acquired by Capstone from BHP in 2013, the mine is fully permitted through 2039 and a study is underway to potentially extend the mine life through 2050.

POSITION OVERVIEW
The Industrial Hygiene Specialist is responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive health hazard monitoring and sampling program to support a safe and health-focused mining operation. This role partners with operations, safety, and support teams to reduce occupational health risks, ensure regulatory compliance, and strengthen Pinto Valley’s Safety and Health Management System.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
- Safety & Compliance: Ensure compliance with MSHA and applicable industrial hygiene regulations, standards, and Pinto Valley procedures while promoting Capstone’s Values in Action.
- Sampling Program Management: Develop and implement hazard sampling programs in accordance with AIHA protocols, including similar exposure group (SEG) strategies.
- Monitoring & Equipment Management: Calibrate, maintain, and manage IH sampling pumps, dosimeters, and media to ensure accurate and defensible data collection.
- Data Analysis & Reporting: Interpret laboratory results, perform trend analysis, and recommend engineering, administrative, or PPE controls to mitigate risk.
- Operational Partnership: Collaborate with operations leadership to proactively identify and reduce IH-related risks across departments.
- Training & Coaching: Coach and train site personnel on IH processes, procedures, and regulatory requirements to strengthen site knowledge and compliance.
- Program Development: Review industry updates and best practices to continuously improve the site’s Industrial Hygiene Program.
- Health & Wellness Support: Partner with the Health and Employee Services Team to support site health initiatives and community stewardship programs.
- Communication & Engagement: Integrate IH topics into line-out meetings and crew discussions to build a culture of ownership and health awareness.
- Program Administration: Support budgeting needs, reporting requirements, and additional Safety and Health initiatives as assigned.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or related discipline
- Demonstrated experience with Industrial Hygiene regulations and standards
- Knowledge of IH sampling equipment and media
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Valid Driver’s License
- Ability to speak, read, comprehend, and write English
Preferred
- Experience in mining or heavy industrial environments
- ArcGIS mapping experience
- Experience conducting occupational exposure assessments and trend analysis
WORK ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Majority of work performed in operational and support areas with routine field exposure
- Some office-based data analysis and reporting work required
- Ability to work in indoor and outdoor environments in varying weather conditions
- Ability to walk, stand, and access active mining areas as needed
