Job Description

Summary

Under close supervision, performs skilled work of moderate difficulty in repairing, maintaining and rebuilding heavy equipment; performs related work as assigned.

Essential Job Functions

Diagnoses, repairs and maintains various systems on diesel and gas equipment.

Performs various preventative maintenance functions.

Maintains an orderly work area.

Performs heavy duty equipment repair on the fleet of construction vehicles, including, electrical/electronic systems, backup alarms, tires, etc. to ensure good running condition and appearance.

Repairs and maintains County equipment in compliance with DOT regulations.

Fuels heavy equipment for the County, whether in the shop or in the field, to keep fuel at a level to accomplish work and to replenish burned fuel of equipment in the field.

Repairs equipment in the shop, working on priority breakdowns first.

Retrieves stranded vehicles and brings them to the shop for repairs; returns repaired equipment to work site.

Completes work records to submit for tracking repairs and maintenance that has been completed.

Works with other mechanics to diagnose and repair County equipment as necessary which includes emergency vehicles, construction equipment, snow removal equipment, mining equipment, small engines such as weed eaters, cars, light trucks, and back-up generators.

Communicate with other County employees regarding the driving and operation problems of their vehicles.

Reads manuals and specifications and diagrams to obtain knowledge and familiarity with parts and equipment.

Knowledge and Skills

Knowledge of methods practices, materials, instruments and tools used in equipment maintenance.

Knowledge of equipment maintenance.

Knowledge of safety practices.

Skill in diagnosing and repairing problems.

Skill in using diagnostic equipment.

Skill in using and caring for various tools and equipment.

Skill in maintaining records and reports.

Skill in effectively communicating verbally and in writing.

Skill to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public.
