We are looking for someone to join Team Yuma as a Communications Technician, working with the Information Technology Department. The ideal candidate will have vast knowledge in wireless telecommunication systems and the ability to problem solve, multi-task, prioritize, and manage time effectively, while providing excellent customer service.  

Under basic supervision, performs maintenance, installation, technical support, and repair services for equipment and infrastructure of the City's wireless telecommunication systems for the Information Technology (IT) Department; identifies and resolves problems to minimize customer down time, and assures the on-going functionality and availability of City wireless technology systems.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Performs programming, maintenance, installation, technical support, and repair services for City's wireless telecommunication systems, including radio and microwave systems, mobile data infrastructures, public safety communications dispatch, and peripheral equipment.
  • Works independently, and makes appropriate decisions based on experience; performs work within scope of authority and training; duties may vary according to job assignment.
  • Programs, re-programs and repairs mobile radio and wireless communication equipment.
  • Services, repairs, and provides preventive maintenance services for Yuma Regional Communication System (YRCS) dispatch consoles and radios.
  • Uses specialized electronic test equipment, analytic tools, and specialized hand tools to maintain and repair telecommunications and radar equipment.
  • Installs, repairs, splices, tests, and terminates telecommunications wiring and cabling.
  • Refers complex problems which are beyond existing skills to senior technical staff, and tracks the problem until it has been resolved.
  • Documents work completed and maintains IT records; notifies manager and other technicians of unusual problems or problem trends in order to facilitate continued improvement of client services.
  • Identifies technical problems which need to be addressed by improved policies and procedures.
  • Assists in evaluating new technology, and administering equipment inventory.
  • Supports the relationship between the City and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; promotes the City goals and priorities, vision, values and the “Yuma Way”, and complies with all City policies and procedures.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
