Medical Assistant-Diploma 27.5 Credits- 646 Contact Hours 34 Weeks


A. The Medical Assistant Program provides the necessary training for entry-level positions as a medical assistant in a clinic, physician’s office or urgent care facility. Graduates will be able to use their skills and knowledge in such areas as patient interaction, basic coding and billing, office procedures, use of technology, medical legal documentation and electronic medical records. They will also be able to appropriately assess patient/client situations and intervene within their scope of practice. The Medical Assistant program consists of multiple courses (7 modules) including Externship. Day & Evening Classes are attended 4 days per week and Externship is full time at 5 days per week; After successful completion of all classroom coursework, the student will be scheduled to complete 160 hours of Clinical Practicum/Externship in a Private Medical Practice or Clinic and will give the student supplementary on the job training to enhance their classroom experience. The Medical Assistant students are prepared to take Certification and/or Registry exams. After successful completion of all Classroom & Externship requirements, Brookline’s Career Services Department will assist with obtaining employment. Brookline College cannot guarantee employment, Lifetime Placement Assistance is available to all Graduates. Educational Objectives & Corresponding Occupation


Graduates are prepared to gain employment as entry-level Medical Assistants (CIP code 51.0801, SOC code 31-9092.00) performing clinical and/or administrative functions in a medical office, clinic, hospital, or other healthcare-related setting. Administrative functions may include answering telephones, scheduling appointments, greeting patients, updating and filing patient charts, ordering supplies, arranging for hospital admission and laboratory services, handling billing, collections, bookkeeping, and the use of electronic medical records software. Clinical functions may include relaying prescriptions to a pharmacy, collecting and preparing laboratory specimens, sterilizing medical instruments, preparing patients for x-rays, taking electrocardiograms, removing sutures and changing dressings.

G. Additional Information: Must be a citizen of the United States or an eligible non-citizen as classified by the Department of Homeland Security. Prerequisites: 18 years of age at the time of admission and possess a high school diploma or GED (or equivalent). If a prospective student is less than 18 years of age, they may be permitted to enroll if they obtain parent or legal guardian signature of approval or demonstrate that they are otherwise covered under state emancipation statutes. Other Requirements: Allied health students are required to demonstrate completion of immunizations paid by Brookline College. Requirements are as follows: two (2) MMR in a lifetime, two (2) Varicella, Tetanus vaccine less than 10 years old, at least the first two (2) series of Hepatitis B, and Negative PPD (TB) or a negative chest X-ray done within the past year. Brookline College will not pay for an X-ray if student had positive TB skin test requiring an annual chest X-ray. They will also be required to complete a background check and, if applicable, finger print clearance.
