1. Course Objective:  


Description: The Certificate of Completion (CCL) in Emergency Medical Technology curriculum provides the student with the necessary knowledge and skills in accordance with the National EMS Scope of Practice published by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Arizona Department of Health Services. Successful completion of the curriculum and upon licensure, the candidate can seek employment with ambulance service companies, first responder agencies, fire departments, and hospitals as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Emphasis is on the fundamental principles and skills required to provide emergency medical care for the ill or injured. The primary focus of an EMT is to respond to, assess and triage emergent, urgent, and non-urgent requests for medical care, apply basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and medical transportation to/from an emergency or health care facility.


This program is designed to meet education requirements for licensure or certification in the State of Arizona. Granting licensure and certification is the sole responsibility of the state board or approval agency. This program is only offered and available to students located in the State of Arizona. The Maricopa County Community College District and colleges define student location within Administrative Regulation 2.2.3(7).


Competencies to be achieved:



  • Demonstrate the administration of CPR and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) on adults and children using methods that meet current BLS standards.

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of medical, legal and ethical roles and scope of practice of an Emergency Medical Technician.

  • Apply effective oral, written, and visual communication skills to manage an emergency response.

  • Apply current technology to specific tasks related to emergency medical services.

  • Collaborate with various populations in public safety systems.

  • Demonstrate critical thinking through written, oral, and visual formats in various environments to manage diverse situations specific to an emergency response.

  • Demonstrate patient advocacy with respect to cultural and individual differences.

  • Demonstrate awareness of procedures to ensure patient, public, personnel, and personal safety.

Admission Requirements:  



  • You must be at least 18 years of age at the time of registration or have EMT Program Director approval. 

  • You must have ONE of the following:


    • High School graduation GPA of 3.0 (must be an official U.S. High school transcript and completed within the last 10 years) OR

    • Reading score of 261 or higher on the Next - Gen Accuplacer reading exam OR

    • 90 or higher score on the EdReady Critical Reading and Critical Thinking exam OR

    • Successful completion of CRE 101 OR

    • Associate’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution OR

    •  Permission from EMT Program Director



Background check requirements licensing/credential:


The AZ Bureau of EMS and the National Registry of EMTs require the disclosure of an applicant’s criminal history when applying for certification. For additional information, consult the AZ Bureaus of EMS at 602.364.3186 or the National Registry at www.nremt.org.


Industry Standard background check requirements/restrictions for working in the occupation:


National Registry Certification Testing: Successful completion of the EMT 104 course with a grade of “C” or higher is required to be eligible to take the national certification exam. The National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) has adopted a Criminal Conviction Policy to safeguard the public from individuals who, in practice as an EMS professional, might pose a danger to the public. Other requirements needed:


I understand that due to my potential exposure to blood and airborne infectious materials during my potential employment as an EMT, I may be at risk of acquiring Varicella, tuberculosis, and other airborne diseases. My employer, as a condition of employment, may require my vaccination against Varicella and tested for Tuberculosis, have the Hep-B vaccination series, Covid-19, Seasonal Flu shot, and other vaccinations as determined by my assignment.


Clinical Requirements:


EMT students are required to document at least 10 patient contacts in an actual or simulated patient care environment outside of regularly scheduled EMT104 class time. Students have two options to satisfy the clinical requirements:


Option 1: EMT104AB


EMT104AB is an optional course designed to help prepare students for the national certification exam and provide simulated patient contacts in the prehospital setting. EMT104AB students will be under the direct supervision of a preceptor and must submit documentation of at least 10 patient contacts and a preceptor evaluation.


Option 2: Prehospital or Medical Practice Observation


Students may schedule their own observation with a prehospital agency or medical practice facility. The EMT Dept will NOT assist students in locating or scheduling prehospital or medical practice observations. Students must meet all the requirements of the agency or facility accepting them. Students must submit documentation of at least 10 patient contacts and a preceptor evaluation from a certified or licensed healthcare provider. The required paperwork is available on Canvas.
