Description
A. Description: Two courses: UHIT 101 (8 modules) and the 21stCentury Skillscourse, Creative Problem Solving, are designed to prepare students for the Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS) national certification exam with the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) for positions such as Medical Billing Specialists, Health Information Technologists, and Medical Coding Specialists.
Learners will receive an overview of medical terminology, health insurance, medical billing, and an introduction to medical coding that includes ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II. This includes learning the rules and regulations mandated by legislation and overseen by federal agencies such as Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), and Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) laws. Students will learn what information needs to be collected from patients, apply information to billing claims such as the CMS-1500 form, understand the Explanation of Benefit (EOB), Remittance Advice (RAs), and Medicare Summary Notice (MSN).
Competencies:
• Apply policies and procedures for the use of data required in health care reimbursement.
• Evaluate the revenue cycle management process.
• Explain the organization of the ICD-10-CM and CPT/HCPCS tabular lists, indices, tables, and guidelines.
• Apply ICD-10-CM and CPT/HCPCS codes according to current guidelines.
• Apply word structures to divide and build medical words.
• Apply medical terminology to each body system.
There are four domains (areas) listed in the CEHRS Test Plan:
1. The revenue cycle and regulatory compliance
2. Insurance eligibility and other payer requirements
3. Coding and coding guidelines
4. Billing and reimbursement

Other requirements needed: No additional requirements for the program. However, immunizations and vaccinations may be needed by an employer, this could include TB testing, Covid vaccination, MMR, and Hepatitis B.
