Description
1. Course Objective:
Description: The EKG and Phlebotomy Technician program prepares students for dual roles in cardiovascular and laboratory healthcare settings. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of heart anatomy and function, patient care procedures, safety and infection control practices, and hands-on training in both electrocardiography and blood collection. The program emphasizes practical skills, professional communication, and proper documentation techniques needed to support patient diagnosis and care in clinical environments.
Competencies to be achieved: Communicate professionally with patients and healthcare teams using both verbal and nonverbal techniques. Understand cardiovascular anatomy, heart function, and essential medical terminology. Apply OSHA and HIPAA standards to maintain safety, privacy, and regulatory compliance. Perform and document electrocardiograms (EKGs) with accurate lead placement. Interpret heart rhythms and waveforms, identifying abnormalities that require medical attention. Conduct Holter monitoring and stress testing, and provide clear patient instructions before and after procedures. Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection using proper techniques and equipment. Safely handle, transport, and process laboratory specimens while preserving specimen integrity. Follow infection control protocols and manage complications during blood collection procedures. Accurately document patient care and clinical procedures according to professional standards.
