1. Course Objective: The focused Registered Behavior Technician Training course will provide you with the essential skills and knowledge to meet the 40-hour training component, which is one of the requirements by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) to become an RBT.
Description: As a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT®), you can seek professional opportunities in a variety of growing industries not limited to psychiatric technicians and aids, behavioral disorders and mental health, and education. This RBT training course includes Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) and provides you with the required 40-hour training needed prior to scheduling an Initial Competency Assessment with your supervisor. Within the course you have access to a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA®) who will provide feedback on in-course assignments designed to specifically prepare you for the 40-hour training requirement for the RBT certification through Behavioral Analyst Certification Board (BACB®).
Competencies to be achieved:
- Summarizing the role and the responsibilities of an RBT
- Measuring operationally defined behaviors through data collection and graphical representation
- Understanding a learner's current motivations and reinforcers
- Determining appropriate behavior analytic interventions based on observations and documentation
- Choosing ethical behavior that upholds the rights and dignity of learners
- How to interpret and evaluate within real-world scenarios

- A certifying exam can only be scheduled if the following criteria have been met:
- 18(+) years old with a high school education or equivalent
- Passed criminal background check
- Passed abuse registry check
- Completion of a 40-hour training course*
- Successfully complete an RBT initial competency assessment
- Approved application from BACB
- *Note that completion of this course only satisfies the 40-hour training component required for application to take the RBT certification exam. This course does not include the required Initial Competency Assessment, which is a separate component of certification. The Initial Competency Assessment must be completed after the 40-hour training with a BACB-approved supervisor. Completion of the 40-hour course alone does not make you eligible to take the RBT exam. Please review the BACB’s RBT Handbook for full details regarding certification requirements and the order of completion.
- Effective January 1, 2023, only individuals who reside in the United States (US), Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom (UK) may apply for BACB certification.
- State Requirements:
- This program is designed to meet the educational requirements to apply for professional licensure or certification in all states. However, the course does not include the required Initial Competency Assessment, which is a separate step in the certification process.
- Each state’s licensure or certification authority is responsible for establishing the requirements for professional licensure or certification in its state. Completing this program does not guarantee professional licensure or certification. Eligibility may also depend on factors like work experience, professional examinations, passing a background check, and other criteria. Students are encouraged to contact the appropriate state licensing authority to confirm the requirements for licensure or a certificate in the state where they live, work, or intend to live or work.
Prerequisites:
There are no prerequisites to complete this course; however, you will need to have access to a video camera (on your phone or other familiar device) and be able to upload the video as an .mp4 file to the assignment pages for review. These activities are required to successfully pass the course.
