The Detention Officer Training Academy is an introduction to correctional operations: ethics and professionalism, communication, custody and control, conflict and crisis management, problem solving, officer integrity, hostage survival, riot control measures, defensive tactics, CPR/AED for first responders, medical and mental health issues, and field experience.
Credit Hours Required: 16

Program Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the Detention Officer Training Academy Certificate, the learner should be able to:
- Explain the basic principles of effective inmate supervision when working in a county jail or correctional facility.
- Identify legal definitions, concepts, and principles to Arizona law enforcement, courts, or correctional settings.
- Communicate information in a clear and organized manner.
- Identify the methods and purposes of institutional safety as it relates to inmate control and supervision.
- Analyze ethical dilemmas encountered in the law enforcement and/or corrections fields.
- Apply constitutional, statutory, procedural, and case law to real-life correctional situations.
- Adapt to the diverse and multicultural nature of American society.
- Explain the importance of inmate rights and essential services.
- Demonstrate physical fitness standards.
- Demonstrate initial assessments of injuries and/or illness and appropriate first aid procedures.
- Demonstrate defensive tactics according to AZ POST standards.
- Demonstrate the components involved in booking, global, and incident searches.
- Explain the values and purpose of officer integrity.
- Demonstrate problem solving skills in simulated hostage situations.
- Demonstrate problem solving skills in simulated riot situations.
- Demonstrate all correctional operations and processes in a real-world field experience.
