Description

Course Name: Spanish-English Interpretation Certificate Program


A. Course Objective: 


This three-course non-credit professional development certificate program is designed to train entry-level interpreters in Spanish to meet the needs of doctors' offices, hospitals, public health settings, courts, legal offices, schools, etc.


Competencies to be achieved:


Knowledge of English and Spanish health, legal and business terminology; knowledge of how to make translation decisions on the basis of the translation requirements; training in cultural competency; preparation to work as a translator in health, legal and business settings.


It is intended for bilingual (English-Spanish) speakers with no formal training in interpretation who wish to improve or expand their knowledge and skills in interpretation. The online format is ideal for professionals who, due to career and family obligations, cannot attend face-to-face classes.


This training program is offered STATEWIDE.

$2,475 for all three courses


Arizona Court Interpreter Credentialing Program (ACICP) exam: Taking the exam is optional. Individuals interested in becoming credentialed court interpreters in Arizona may pursue credentialing through the Arizona Court Interpreter Credentialing Program (ACICP). The credentialing process includes required training and examinations, with requirements varying by credential tier. For Spanish interpreters pursuing a Tier 3 or Tier 4 credential, the Oral Court Interpreter Exam assesses sight translation, consecutive interpretation, and simultaneous interpretation. Oral Court Interpreter Exam fee: $375. Additional fees may apply for required training and written examinations. Credentialing and exam fees are not included in course tuition and cannot be purchased through University of Arizona Continuing and Professional Education.

For individuals interested in interpreting in courts; the Federal Court Interpreter Certification Examination (FCICE), a nationally recognized Spanish-English certification for interpreters working in U.S. federal courts; and national healthcare interpreter certifications offered by the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) and the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI). Eligibility requirements, examinations, and fees vary by credentialing organization. Credentialing and exam fees are not included in course tuition and cannot be purchased through University of Arizona Continuing and Professional Education.

Background check requirements for licensing and background restrictions for working in the occupation: Specific employers or roles may require a pre-employment background check.


Other requirements needed: Demonstrated proficiency in writing both English and Spanish prior to being admitted to the program. Students must successfully complete an application and Spanish-English proficiency test prior to being allowed to register for the Spanish-English Translation Certificate Program.
